Yemen - ‘Arabia Felix’ or happy Arabia as the Romans used to
say. An ancient land, sacred to many, being lost to one of the most devastating
humanitarian crises of the modern age. Years of relentless conflict, economic
collapse, reduced aid and extreme weather have caused millions to suffer from
malnutrition and severe poverty.
With a population of around 40 million, figures show that
around 18 million people (~45%) face worsening food insecurity, with 41,000 at
risk of famine.
How about the children? Nearly 50% of children under five
(~2.3million) are chronically malnourished. In some areas, such as the western
lowlands, acute malnutrition rates among children have reached 33%. Figures
show that a child dies every 10 minutes in Yemen from preventable causes,
including severe malnutrition.
This is the reality of Yemen today.
