Uganda

Uganda is a country that still finds itself in the grip of severe poverty. Despite making strides in economic growth in recent years, substantial challenges remain. The stark reality is that more than 2 in 5 Ugandans are surviving on less than $2.15 a day, highlighting the depth of poverty in the nation. The situation is dire, with over 18 million individuals—many of them children—living below the poverty line [World Bank, 2023].

The implications of this widespread poverty are profound. Education, which is a linchpin for development, is severely impacted; as per the latest figures, a staggering 50% of young girls in Uganda remain illiterate, a barrier that perpetuates the cycle of poverty and limits opportunities for future generations [Knoema, 2022].

In response to the country's pressing needs, the Global Relief Trust (GRT) has embarked on crucial initiatives to support the people of Uganda. GRT's commitment is visible in its establishment of regular food distributions, which aim to provide immediate sustenance to the most needy. Recognising the importance of reliable and clean water sources, GRT has also been installing water solutions to ensure that communities have access to this vital resource.

GRT's work in Uganda is set to expand, especially during the holy month of Ramadan—a time for charity and giving. Planning is underway to intensify support efforts, acknowledging that combating poverty is a multifaceted challenge that demands consistent and comprehensive action. Through food, water, and future building projects, GRT is dedicated to uplifting the lives of Ugandans, one step at a time.
